Improvisation: Redefining Office Interior DesignA Dialogue with Space
Countless times we have immersed ourselves in the sense of space, have absorbed the mood of the environment, and taken in the shady green outside the windows. It is like a dialogue with space. Making eye contact, and then things kick off. At first, all that is floating in front of your mind is a red brick wall. Then there are all the daring colors and unfettered expressiveness of the industrial narrative, not the least bit jarring against the verdant hues outside the window.
An interior designer were to make a new start, in a new office, how would that go? No more clients’ demands to weigh you down, no more having to conform to other people’s dreams. Lin Yu Wei, a renowned designer, channels his creativity to realize even greater dreams for his clients. After a long monologue with himself after having searched so long for his artistic essence, he is like an actor waiting with bated breath for the curtains to go up so he can step into the spotlight.
In terms of material, it was a breakthrough decision to use PVC, usually more of a floor material, for the walls. The imitation rust PVC was embellished with 3,500 rivets, applied by hand, to create an industrial-style framework. The horizontal and vertical lines, complementing and highlighting each other, are the result of a meticulous eye for detail combined with a rough-and-ready approach to execution. The raised steel plates of the first floor, part of the architectural and aesthetical framework, set off the soft vertical lines of the curtains, while the beams of light on the second floor move along with the rotating partition throughout the cycle of the seasons.
To overcome the constraints imposed by the long rectangular shape of the available space, large items of furniture such as the conference table, front desk, and self-designed Y-shaped worktable are designed at a 45-degree tilt, not only opening up more room for walking around but also allowing the wonderful scenery outside to make its visual impact at a niftily slanted 135-degree angle. The sunshine and shade trees, and even the falling rain and the people strolling past outside, provide an ever-changing decorative background that never gets old.
The project started in August 2014 and finished in January 2015 in Taipei. The design was awarded Bronze in the A' Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design Award in 2016. This prestigious award recognizes designs that authenticate experience and resourcefulness, incorporating best practices in art, science, design, and technology. Lin Yu Wei's innovative approach and strong technical and creative skills have contributed to a redefinition of office interior design, making the world a better place.
